Finnish Electrotechnical Trade Association
Annual Report 2023

A word from the Chair of the Board

We have an important role to play in the electrification of Finland

Two hard topics will keep building services professionals busy in 2023: climate change and our eastern neighbour. The whole EU is struggling to get off fossil fuels. Fortunately, Finland has been able to become largely energy self-sufficient and largely fossil-free. We in the electrical trade have played and will continue to play an important role in putting Finland's electrification transformation into practice.

The cyclical turnaround in construction cast a shadow over the autumn. The value of wholesale sales of electrical products fell. The value of sales in 2023 will be €1,275 million, down 5.4% from the record level of the previous year. Still, this is the second best sales figure ever in the STK's statistics.

The number of requests for information on the environmental impact of construction products increased in 2023. The new Construction Act requires data produced and verified by EPDs or similar means for the calculation of the carbon footprint of construction.

Product data for the electrical engineering sector is already available in the STK's Sähkönumerot.fi product database, and the data is used through an interface in different software. In 2023, we will further develop the database and it will be easier for the sector to start creating EPDs.

We had 101 members at the end of the year, meaning that our membership grew.

  Key themes in 2023

Energy efficiency directive

STK worked hard on the reform of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, the EPBD. We discussed the issue with the Ministry of the Environment and presented Finnish views to the lobbying arm of the industry's umbrella organisation, the European Union of Electrical Wholesalers (EUEW).

Climate assessment

STK gave its opinion on the Ministry of the Environment's draft regulation on the climate report and material specification for buildings.

The new Construction Act and the development of Sähkönumerot.fi

The new law will require data produced and verified by EPDs or similar means for the calculation of the carbon footprint of construction. Product data for the electrical engineering sector is already available in the STK's Sähkönumerot.fi product database, which is interfaced with various software applications. We improved the service, for example by enabling the reporting of the GWP value of a product.

Building products regulation

Through the roofing association EUEW, the Federation submitted Finnish views on the Construction Products Regulation and the product passport it defines.

Active and responsible
- work for the benefit of the sector and society

We take care of the workforce

We need plenty more workers for a growing sector. The STK Confederation has set up a website to make it easy to find vacancies in our member companies. We campaign prominently on social media and reach out to young people.

Product knowledge benefits the whole value chain

Accurate product information on Sähkönumerot.fi serves the entire industry. In 2022, we will develop the open interfaces and functionality of the database so that product information can be widely used in the retail value chain and electricity planning. We will also maintain a comprehensive statistical service.

Active advocacy

We communicated the objectives of the government programme, derived from the Union's strategy, through various channels in cooperation with other actors. Our EU-level lobbying was strengthened when STK's CEO Sallamaari Muhonen was elected to the board of The European Union of Electrical Wholesalers (EUEW).

We look after the interests of our members

Representatives of our member companies form a number of cooperation groups that actively align our industry's positions on current issues. Experts from the STK office implement these policies.
